To My Dear: Meet Adele

Granted Brit songbird, Adele, has worked the NYC circuit in the past couple of months, personally I discovered her in an episode of Secret Diary of A Call Girl (love it!) with the ballad "Hometown Glory". However, since her powerful performance on SNL, Adele's got the internet going stark raving mad! I wanted to give her the N1DIR official cosign (trust me it means a lot). I haven't stopped playing 19, her debut album, since I...um... acquired it. So far I got one G digging it, so you should consider doing the same.

Barack & Curtis: Manhood, Power, & Respect

With the emergence of Obama as an iconic figure, the black community now has 2 prototypes for masculinity. The documentary below dissects and compares the two symbols of manhood. Barack rises above the tainted image of what it means to be a black man, while Curtis Jackson is the antihero, gaining respect through fear, and cementing the idea of violence as the weapon.

Fool's Gold

We generally keep this blog lighthearted and simple, so the following might be hard for some of you to digest. Last night I was able to check out the D.U.M.B.O. Art Under the Bridge Festival featuring art exhibits in most of the little shops and restaurants in the neighborhood. The exhibit that obviously stood out to me was that of Ed Kashi, a photography exposé of the current oil crisis in Nigeria (my homeland). The images portray a land devastated by oil drilling, a people living on less than a dollar a day while residing on the some of the most valued oil reserves in the world. One could look at the pictures, and yell propaganda, fabrication, or any other number of terms denying the reality of the inhumane conditions under which the people of the oil rich Niger Delta currently reside in. Easy to do when you're sitting in the safety of your office, or apartment, where these problems seems light years away, you couldn't even see how this could directly affect you. The economy has been shit lately, that must be what's causing these extremely high gas prices...wrong. The area has recently been taken siege by "rebels". Resorting to setting pipelines ablaze, and kidnapping Big Oil employees, the rebels have managed to significantly diminish the country's oil production, causing scarcity of fuel and you guessed it...elevated gas prices around the world. The UN along with other institutions are calling for a resolution of the problem, and bringing peace to the area. The issue, however, was never one of peace, but one of exploitation, and unfair gains by everyone except those who suffer the consequences of the drilling. Take a look at the disparity these people are living in, and you be the judge of if who is the criminal in the situation, and who is simply partaking in civil disobedience. Look for more prints on Ed Kashi's site.

The Incredible Kathy Misick Misick

The madness of fashion week is long gone, but I cannot allow myself to shelf the topic before giving you the Kathy Misick's Spring 09 collection. I could go on a rant about how exquisite, and well crafted the gowns are, but I'm sure I won't do the collection any justice. Check it out for yourself.

Phone.Google.Com

Has the IPhone finally met its match?? So the Google Empire birthed its new baby today, the G1 Android phone. Despite its chunky design, the G1 is said to provide better functionality than its sleeker competitors, combining the touch screen of the Iphone, along with the qwerty of the Crackberry, Google hopes to put a dent in the cellphone game. The phone come with a touch-of-a-button-access to all google apps (google maps, gmail etc) and is run on the "Android market", the first open source technology, allowing users to download and upload civilian created mobile applications. Critics believe that this dream phone may have a problem acquiring the cult following of other smart phones i.e Iphone, but only time will tell. I'm willing to give this gadget a try. More updates to follow.

Here's a breakdown of Android technology.

HOLLA BACK CREEP!

For all the ladies out there who have been harassed, oggled, creepily stared at, inappropriately rubbed up against or worse while traveling around NYC--there's finally a place to spread the word about that creep on the 4 train.

HOLLBACKNYC.com is a site for you to send stories and photos of those horrible instances and disgusting guys who treat you like a piece of meat. As the site proclaims, every woman (and man) has the right to live their life and get around in peace, and HOLLABACK is a way to re-empower those who are left feeling so small. So be armed and ready with your camera phones the next time you find yourself in one of those all too-familiar situations; send all stories and photos to hollabacknyc@gmail.com

If you can't slap 'em, snap 'em!

Killing 'em softly

When I first heard A. Keys would be collaborating with Jack White for the James Bond theme song...well I can't say I wasn't worried. I just couldn't picture Alicia singing rock and roll, but her transition is damn near seamless. The song actually gives me an incentive to pay to see the flick...superficial? Of course.

Heal the World

Calling all young inventors seeking to make a change in the world. Dean Kamen, inventor of the segway, (yes, I laugh at the segway as well) is offering $150,000 to the next creator of a mobile application that can benefit society.

"A lot of people that play with technology in general frankly disappoint me," Kamen says. "Because they use technology to do what you can do with technology instead of what you should do."

If you think you're next inline with the "mobile application that shook the world," then this is your shot.

DANCE LIKE F-ING CRAZY

Those were the instructions I saw in place of an EXIT sign at Santos' Party House last night. German duo Digitalism were there and while the night got off to a late start--I know Sunday is like the new Friday or something, but it didn't make me any less tired--it wasn't long before I was going crazy.

Now last August fellow blogger Nos Def and I were present for what I consider to be the most liberating fun I've ever had--Daft Punk at Keyspan Park. Sometimes when I tell people I was at that show, they act as though I happened to be hanging hillside when Jesus multiplied the loaves and the fishies. "You were there?" they'll ask, their eyes widening and glazing over in their own body's reaction to how high they would have been if they were there, too. "I heard that show was like, the greatest....dude. Yea. Man."

I'll admit that most every other dance and electronica show I've been to since has just been some lame effort to try to recreate August 9th, 2007. I did it with Justice at Terminal Five and I did it last night with Digitalism, and as you can guess, both times have never been up to par. Not to say I don't dance my face off--of course I do--but there's always something missing. The one thing I could have done without last night was the train siren they kept playing in the DJ booth. Imagine the sound of a loud choo-choo coming right towards you, and you'll have some idea of what they were playing every so often in-between mixing. Not cool dudes. You made me miss a beat.

Digitalism is in Sao Paulo on the 27th. Check out this video from Coachella:

Desperately Seeking Tété

Tété-Redemption song (Cover)

I felt like the language barrier would play a part in your decision to check this kid out, hence posting his cover of Redemption song before posting his original material. I'm on the watch for any live NYC performances (he's the only podcast I'm subscribed to ) So check back here for more Tété info.

Tété-Mon Tresor

An Ode to the Net

So in the blurry haze of an unwelcomed sunday night, I looked back on the events of another amazing weekend, downloading songs that served as the backdrops of unforgettable conversations, I realized, once again, that I have no clue how I functioned prior to the phenomenon known as the Internet. Now this may all seem like old news, but as a person that takes almost full advantage of everything the web has to offer, I had to stop for a second and express my endless gratitude to the creators of the internet. From feeling the sudden urge to hear the most random song, to being able to get a photographic glimpse of Ouagadougou (google it), to catching last night's episode of Gossip Girl, to having a web page providing you with an RSS feed to all your favorite sites (Google reader). Sparks once said "If you can't find it on a google search, then it doesn't exist!" The world is literally at our fingertips. Alright just wanted to take a sec to ride the internet's dick, now I'm hopping off it.

Empire Strikes Back

Say goodbye to Firefox and hello to Chrome, the recently unveiled browser from the evil geniuses over at Google. Chrome has been introduced in 43 languages and is currently available for download at www.google.com/chrome/. The unveiling is sure to make Mozilla, Microsoft and other insignificant browsers break out in a sweat. Does anyone remember what happened to Lycos? Yeah that's about to happen again. Isn't there some kind of law against Google's current monopoly of the web?

Jazmine Sullivan ft J.Cole- I need you (J.Cole home-made Remix)

Just to give you a little taste...

David David David David Banner

Accompanied by Brooklyn's own, Maino, and not-so-surprise guest Young Joc, Mr. Banner ripped the stage last night at the Knitting Factory, and despite my late arrival I had the pleasure to catch the end of a very shirtless, and sweaty performance. Banner blessed us with high-octane rock renditions of "Like a Pimp" and "Suicide Doors." (I know it sounds nuts!) The freshly razed rapper was also bent on convincing us that this Mississippi boy could rap, spitting a cappella to let his bars really sink in (and then saying " Don't listen to anyone who says David Banner can't rap!") He then proceeded to make it rain Moet on the crowd, and did a very personal walk through of the crowd enabling some of us to sneak dubs. The verdict? Twas a good night.

Welcome back Ms. Misick

Since our April Cherry Blossoms show, Ms. Kathy Misick has been back in the lab crafting up her fall collection, which is amazing. The collection boasts sexy dresses, exquisitely designed jackets, and ultra-flattering trousers. Don't take it from me though, check out her line for yourself. Purchase something...you need it in your life!

BEEN AROUND THE WORLD...

So this had to be one of my best/most productive weekend ever, despite the inclusion of some seriously seriously tedious and redundant work, which actually induced one of the best conversations I've ever had. Ok I'll get to the point...so one of the parts of the convo that stood out to me was my friend's very passionate Wyclef rant on his lack of recognition, and the fact that his asshole personality actually eclipses his talent (true). Anywho's he popped in Carnival 2: Memoirs of an Immigrant, and I was taken for a trek around the world. I know this album passe, but I was so blown away by the product, I simply had to spread the word. From Sizzla rapping over Minister Farrakhan's violin, to "Touch Your Button Carnival Jam" which he manages to take in a staggering 6 different directions ( i had to keep checking if it was the same song), to even having Paul Simon on a track. We were left with just one question..."Wyclef what's on your Ipod?" So put the hate aside and check the album out. Thanks for the tutorial Sparks!

Apparently Hill and Obama had a secret rendez-vous of sorts last night, discussing methods of eliminating the schism in the Democratic Party, caused by (in my opinion) the long drawn out process of selecting a nominee and conservatives parading as leftists. Seems like the VP status in not too far from Hill's grasps. If you can't beat 'em join em right? Read More

N.E.R.D avenged with Seeing Sounds

When N.E.R.D announced their disbandment in '05, instead of a public outcry, came a resounding sigh of relief. With the less than mediocre performance on Fly or Die leaving even the most avid listeners disenchanted, the dismissal of Pharrel's pet project seemed like the best decision ever made. Fast forward to present day; N.E.R.D. drops single "Everyone Nose" and its a hit, prompting the ladies powdering their noses (pun intended) to bolt to the dance floor ...but wait, what does the rest of the album sound like? Well, its not half bad. Seeing Sounds stays true to N.E.R.D. with catchy guitar riffs, and clever production on tracks like "Anti-Matter" and "Spazz", but delves into a more progressive sound with the addition of elements reminiscent of brit jungle, funk and drum & bass (Check out "Killjoy" and "Love Bomb"). Although it doesn't come close to In Search of... it allows us forget about the sophomore failure. The verdict? Faith in N.E.R.D. is restored... now wipe your nose off!

Sex AND This City

Being a single girl in New York City, I guess its fitting, albeit cliche that Sex and the City was the inspiration needed to revive this blog (sorry.) The movie? Transitioned seamlessly from hit tv show to HIT MOVIE, the plot was thick, but not overdone, the ladies stayed true to character, but were not one dimensional. What I could have done without? The laugh track provided by the overzealous single women and the gays (still love you guys) as they anticipated Samantha's unapologetic use of the word cock...and Jennifer Hudson (you won an oscar?) As I left the theater it was clear what was on the minds of most of the ladies leaving the theatre with their Mirandas, Sams, Charlottes, and Stanfords...I'm in Love with LOVE!! Now in this Lollipop age we live in, you can't help but wonder: Is expecting that Etta James kinda ending is setting oneself up for heart wrenching disappointment, and opting for the "Money Make Me Cum" attitude is the safest bet? ...Man, that's bleak... Fret not ladies, even though kissing a frog only for him to remain a frog SUCKS, i'm convinced that there has got to be a few princes lurking in the shadows...right?? Until then meaningless sex it is! GOOD MOVIE THOUGH!

King James, or just Lebron James?

After a very insightful debate with a dear friend, my opinion stands...  I don't see the correlation between the two images.  Lebron has done many a covers in a suit, he's an athlete for Christ sake, and Giselle is a model.  Two celebs at the top of their game.  It kinda makes sense that he's in athletic wear and dribbling a basketball, he is a basketball player after all, no?  I think before we start attacking Vogue/Bronny for one cover, we ask ourselves some questions like:

What kind of day am I having?
Did I get slighted by a white person today?
How do I feel about Lebron?
How do I feel about white people?
Did I get laid last night?
Is my white boss, being an asshole again?

Not to make your opinions seem trite, but these may all very well be factors in your disapproval of the innocent cover.  Then again this is just the opinion of one happy go lucky girl...COMMENT PLEASE!

Vintage Video of the Week

Wyclef Jean- Guantanamera

Remember when Wyclef wasn't outwardly a tool? and Lauren wasn't running around looking like Homie the clown??  No? Well, here's a refresher!

Roots x Fall Out Boy = Loss

We understand trying to bridge the gap, and appealing to the mainstream, but this is another sad example of great rap groups taking it too far.

Biker Boots

OKay my latest obsession are these Florentini+Baker biker boots. These bad boys have been seen on the likes of Lindsay Lohan and Sarah Jessica Parker and rightly so considering they are FIRE!! Motorcycle Biker boots are the new crack for fashionistas, featured in most fall runway shows, and paired with flirty dresses. Now just think, a cute racer back dress paired with these boots....sexy but edgy....or for a more casual laid back look, paired with jeans or leggings and a graphic tee. I must say I can wait to rock these with a cute swing summery dress, just gives it the right edge. The best par is you can wear them all the way buckled up or with the buckes undone folded down. You can basically give the boots your own twist and make them YOURS in every sense.
Where can I can I find these gems you might ask? Barneys!!
Damage? $485 (Hence, me not owning them yet!) By the time you add on the tax on that, you might have to come up with a talent and join the stragglers on the train. If your Bank account can accomodate it then I say GO FOR IT!! OOORR you can try these other less expensive (I hate to use the word cheap) options .
(side note: think I'm gonna get these in the rugged brown, since I so desperately want some biker boots..lol) also Asos.com They have some cool boots on that website too and the prices won't leave you on welfare.
Well this is my fashion Post for the week and if anyone else knows where hot cool biker boots can be found in stores in NYC, please SHARE!!!!
Signing off, its your friendly neighborhood fashion diva/adviser,
KACH!!!

Webbie- I miss you

Aww!! Can't get enough of rap songs about love. Question though? Who's the sucker doing the hook and not getting ANY shine in the video? Holla if you know the answer!!! I'd much rather google Teyana Taylor...SIKE!

Less than zero

In case you were wondering that is in fact Robert Downey Jr in black face...We're just going to sit back and watch the mud get thrown at his upcoming flick, Tropic Thunder, by the omniscient forces of the NAACP. We consider this bigger news than a rapper, playing a rapper, and a bomb going off in time square at 3:45 AM, so you can pop off if you don't agree. Hey, look at that, all of today's headlines in one post!!!

WARNING CONTENT MAY TRIGGER...SEIZURES??

Gnarls Barkley- RUN

Seems like whoever conjured up the video for Gnarls Barkley's single "Run," took it a litttlle bit too far. The lighting sequence in the last minute of the video cause it to fail the Harding Test (a test devised to prevent seizure friendly material from airing.) GB has been advised to do some quick editing, before the video is allowed to air on TV, pushing back its Thursday premier date. These kids just can't get a break. First the album leaks, and now their video is deemed harmful, to the epileptic...

So, a number of political blogs are claiming that Hil's campaign ran an ad featuring a more tan version of Obama in an attempt to discredit his... fair skin tone?? Is Hil trying to pull the house slave over field slave card? I mean, we understand Hil's was getting a bit desperate, but after her performance in Supa Dupa Tuesday Takeover Part Deux last night, things can't be that bad. Blogger's are reducing the PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS to a Paris/Nicole feud. Next thing you know, Team Obama will release photos of Clinton free balling!! Yes, we are referring to Hilary.

    TWINSSSS!!!!

The Village Voice's Micheal Musto got to experience a day as the fair dame Lohan. We could have sworn we were looking the fresh out of rehab tween's nudie picks, but that clever bastard Musto had us fooled. The resemblance is uncanny!!!
